If you are planning a kitchen remodel, bathroom remodel, full home remodel, or a new construction project, I'll bet you haven't consider the importance of lighting from the Title 24 codes requirements (if you live in California), the environment, and how lighting has an effect on us psychologically and emotionally.
So, what is Title 24 of the California Code of Regulations? It is known as the California Building Standards Code or just "Title 24," contains the regulations that govern the construction of buildings in California. The California Title 24 Building Energy Efficiency Standards are designed to ensure new and existing buildings achieve energy efficiency and preserve outdoor and indoor environmental quality. These measures are listed in the California Code of Regulations. The California Energy Commission is responsible for adopting, implementing and updating building energy efficiency. Local city and county enforcement agencies have the authority to verify compliance with applicable building codes, including energy efficiency.
Are you overwhelmed, yet? Let me tell you, reading the materials online, doing the research, and attending Continuing Education Classes regarding this when it comes to lighting of existing and new homes has been mind-blowing, and I work in the design and construction industry. One of my clients tried to read it and figure it out for herself. She finally gave up after frustration and called me. You don't want to be caught off guard when the inspector comes to review your project for permitting and inspection. It is a costly mistake.
Whether you realize it or not, lighting design has an impact on us psychologically and emotionally. Take notice of this in your office, your home, your favorite restaurant, boutique, or hotel. Each of these spaces was designed with the lighting in mind to generate a psychological and emotional response from you.
Think about a fine dining restaurant. Typically, the lighting is low. They use lighting sparingly at tables to help you read the menu. They may highlight their wine room with more light to encourage you to engage in their wine offerings. The lighting to the restrooms is often brighter, because people want to follow a well-lit path. In the entry, the lighting may be a little brighter for you to identify the host or hostess. I can guess you never realized this is what is happening when you go out for a meal.
Psychologically, if you want a space to feel pleasant, the use of wall lighting rather than a majority of the lighting coming directly down from recessed lighting is going to be most effective. You would also want the lighting design to be non-uniform and the distribution of brightness in each space. Depending on the visual tasks being performed within a space determines how bright or dim it will be.
Think about the public spaces that you visit everyday. They rely on higher levels of lighting with a more uniform distribution of light from overhead lighting sources, predominantly. Does this sound like your office?
Do you want a room to feel more spacious? This can be achieved by providing overall high levels of illumination with even distribution of light on the walls and uniform lighting on all surfaces. Think about a powder bathroom. Typically, it is a tiny space. But when you use multiple forms of lighting, it can make your feel as though it is larger than it really is.
Do you want to feel relaxed? Think about your bedroom or a spa treatment room and how they are lit. Dimmers are very important to achieve this by using non-uniform distribution of lighting, wall lighting, and lower light levels, typically.
Did you ever consider the intensity of lighting could have an effect on your emotions?
Research published in the Journal of Psychology conducted by the University of Toronto Scarborough suggest the greater more intense lighting can have an effect on a person's emotions - both positive and negative.
“Marketers may also adjust the lightening levels in the retail environment, according to the nature of the products on sale,” says Xu. “If you are selling emotional expressive products such as flowers or engagement rings it would make sense to make the store as bright as possible.”
