Ok, so yesterday was a complete sh*t show! I mean one unexpected major inconvenience after another. I found myself struggling with negative thoughts like, "how can I run my life and business without power, water, and the internet?!" Dramatic, I know.
At some point, I was over the frustration, and the thought came "Ok Aaron, calm down and accept what is happening. Get out of the tailspin and work through it...after all, this is not the end of the world."
Had those days? I completely empathize. Life is challenging for some days. You've got your plans for the day, the month or even the year and feelin' good!
Then, out of nowhere, sh*t happens! You know, the sh*t that pops up that you have no control over.
Well, I got you friend! Here are a few things that work for me when life throws a curveball (or two, or three):
ACCEPT THAT SH*T
I know, I know. You're thinking "Aaron you've bumped your head, you don't understand." I get it and do understand.
Psychology Today says, “New theories of therapy have been developed with acceptance as the main focus. An example of this is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy or Training, (instead of therapy, to avoid the stigma). ACT helps train mindfulness: an awareness of the present moment without judgment. The individual is then better able to tolerate negative thoughts and feelings." Word.
Acceptance does not mean approval, but it will alleviate the grief and strife that comes along with life's turmoil. Sometimes, sh*t happens that you have no control over, so accept it, get into action, and go with the flow.
I could offer a huge list of how to work through the sh*t storms, but for now, here are a few tips that work for me:
Figure out what you CAN control in the situation and take steps to alleviate the issue.
Ask for help if needed. I know from experience how hard this can be, but it sure makes life easier when you have support when needed.
Self-care. Whatever that is for you. For me it's a mani/pedi, a nourishing meal, a great workout, a chat with a good friend, getting out in nature, sprucing up my home. You get the idea... take it easy.
MY FINAL SH*T HAPPENS THOUGHTS
We can't always foresee obstacles coming down our path, but we CAN have a “Plan B." And that plan is called acceptance, action and practicing being flexible - like bamboo...it's roots are firmly planted in the ground, but it flows with the wind.
And remember...you got this!
